If I suspect gum recession when should I see a dentist?
By Dr. Brett Silverman | Nov 20, 2019 | General Oral Care, Gum/Periodontal Disease
Quick answer…right now!
It is important that you get seen by a dentist as soon as possible if you suspect gum recession. Gum recession could be a sign of something more serious.
Gum disease, periodontal disease and gum recession
Gum disease is the first phase of periodontal disease. If you have gum disease, you may be experiencing:
-
Discolored gums that look bright red and irritated
-
Gums that feel soft to the touch
-
Gums that bleed when brushing and flossing
It is important to stop gum disease before it advances to periodontal disease. However, if you’re already noticing gum recession, it could possibly be too late.
If the infection spreads and worsens, you could experience the following classic signs of periodontal disease:
-
Receding, swollen or inflamed gums
-
Purple or bright red gums
-
Tender, sensitive gums
-
Loose teeth
-
Consistent bad breath or bad taste in your mouth
-
Mouth sores
-
Changes in your bite
-
Spaces in between the teeth that appear over time
-
Pus between the gum line and teeth
As if that doesn’t sound bad enough, if you let those periodontal symptoms get worse, you could experience respiratory disease, digestive disorders, stroke, diabetes, heart attack, pancreatic cancer or premature birth.

What else can cause gum recession?
Although periodontal disease is a common cause of gum recession, there are several other causes, as well.
-
Genetics
-
Brushing your teeth too aggressively
-
Changes in your hormones
-
Inadequate dental care
-
Using tobacco products
-
Misaligned bite
-
Crooked teeth
-
Clenching or grinding the teeth (called bruxism)
-
Lip or tongue body piercing
