Do You Have Black Lines Around Your Teeth and Gums After Dental Work?

(Updated September 2023)

Maybe you had some dental work done years ago and now you have black lines around your teeth. There is nothing worse than undergoing a cosmetic procedure (thinking it will give you a nearly perfect smile) only to realize that your teeth have black lines around them.

Quite frankly…it stinks. No one wants that!

In fact, one of the most frequently asked questions we get from new patients is, “Why are black lines around my teeth and gums? I thought they were going to be perfect, which is why I paid all of that money!”

They complain of a black line near the gums. These dark lines make it obvious that you have undergone dental work, which is unfortunate, as most patients want their smile to look natural.

Fortunately, our dentists can fix this problem.

At Advanced Cosmetic & Family Dentistry in Alpharetta, we have truly seen it all. Don’t let embarrassment from this black line keep you from giving us a call.

We can improve the appearance of your old dental crowns. You never have to simply live with the current result you have. You can trust us to take your beautiful smile and help improve the overall appearance!

Black lines around dental crowns = metal

It’s quite simple. The reason you are seeing that unsightly black line around your teeth when you smile is because the metal part of the crown restoration is showing through.

If you’re experiencing this problem, you’ve likely had what is called a porcelain-fused-to-metal crown restoration (we will call it PFM for short). While the metal part provides strength for the crown, it certainly doesn’t do you any favors in the smile department.

Sure, you want a “solid” restoration that will hold up for years to come, but strength doesn’t matter if your PFM crowns are causing your smile to appear unsightly.

It’s no wonder that patients frequently wish to get rid of this line because it makes the crowns look unrealistic. Natural teeth do not have this type of stark discoloration, so this dark line practically screams, “I have a crown!”

The solution? All porcelain crowns

The way to get rid of those unattractive dark, black lines is to replace the old crowns with new, porcelain crowns. Our crowns are custom created with beautiful porcelain without using metal, so they appear very natural (without metal).

  • Porcelain crowns are strong and dependable, yet they do not contain metal. This means there’s no chance of a dark line developing near the gum line. Many patients look younger and healthier when they have replaced the old, noticeable crowns with new porcelain crowns.
  • Our dentists can create a beautiful porcelain crown in a single visit using the CEREC system. This means fewer appointments and much faster results with same-day CEREC crowns.

Watch the video below to hear Dr. Silverman explain in more detail:

Obviously, a beautiful, natural-looking smile doesn’t have the “black lines” problem, so if you’re looking to really get the smile you’ve always wanted (without the black/metal ring around your teeth and gums), then your best option is likely restoring your crowns using an all-porcelain material.

So if your old crown is impacting the appearance of your smile, why not do something about it? Our dentists can provide you with the beautiful, natural-looking smile you desire.
