Porcelain bridges–all you NEED to know!

When a patient has missing teeth, simple tasks such as chewing food become much more difficult. The remaining teeth are forced to compensate for the missing teeth, which can lead to uneven wear.

Patients with missing teeth may also struggle to speak clearly, and they can feel self conscious about their smiles. In this situation, a fixed porcelain bridge can be the ideal solution.

Types, Benefits & Treatment: Porcelain Bridges

A fixed bridge is a dental prosthetic used to replace missing teeth. It is used by patients who still have some of their natural teeth, as the bridge anchors itself to neighboring teeth (called the abutment teeth).

The bridge is attached to the abutment teeth on either side of the missing tooth or teeth, and an artificial tooth (called a pontic) goes in the space where the tooth is missing in order to “bridge” the gap. Fixed bridges are natural-looking and make it easier for patients to function in their daily lives.

At Advanced Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we provide our patients with fixed bridges made out of porcelain for the most realistic and attractive results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who can benefit from a fixed bridge?

A fixed bridge is a good treatment option for almost any patient who is missing a tooth or multiple teeth, but still has some natural teeth and is in decent oral health.

What kinds of fixed bridges are available?

There are three types of dental bridges: traditional, cantilever, and Maryland bonded. The right type of bridge for you will depend on which teeth are anchoring the bridge.

Why choose a fixed bridge for replacing missing teeth?
  • Unlike partial dentures, which are removable, a fixed bridge is a permanent structure.
  • Getting a fixed bridge eliminates the need for messy denture adhesives and other inconveniences that go along with removable appliances, such as slipping or discomfort.
  • Bridges are also easy to care for, as they can be brushed just like natural teeth.
  • In addition, a fixed bridge can improve the patient’s facial structure and increase his or her self confidence.
When can I get a fixed bridge?

Provided your oral health is in check, you can likely get a fixed bridge as soon as you decide you want to do something about your missing teeth. Scheduling a consultation gives you the opportunity to learn about all your options and determine whether a bridge is the best treatment choice for you.

How are fixed bridges placed?

Getting a fixed bridge takes place over multiple dental appointments.

  • During the first appointment, the abutment teeth are prepared, meaning some tooth structure from the teeth on either side of the gap is removed to make room for the crowns that will cover them.
  • Impressions are taken and sent to the lab where the bridge will be crafted, and the patient will be given a temporary bridge to wear in the meantime.
  • At a later appointment, the patient’s temporary bridge will be taken out and the new bridge is placed. Additional appointments may be necessary to get the fit adjusted to the patient’s liking.
